Program Overview

Travel to one of the most mysterious and secluded areas of the world, Patagonia. With the spectacular landscape of the Andes, rolling pampas, Andean lakes, abundant wildlife, and a wealth of fossils from prehistoric wildlife to ancient humans, the vibrant natural history of Patagonia has intrigued scientists and beckoned explorers for generations. Our adventure starts in Santiago at the foot of the Andes before flying to Puerto Montt with its lakes, snowcapped volcano, and famous fish market. The centerpiece of the trip is a 4-night stay in Torres del Paine National Park considered the crown jewel of Patagonia. Here condors ride on currents above the Andes, and foxes, rheas, and guanacos give chase across the pampas. Our adventure concludes with lunch and tasting of select Chilean vintages at a private vineyard in the Casablanca Valley.

Fly to Puerto Montt and transfer to nearby Puerto Varas with views of Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes reflected in the lake. Explore Puerto Varas. (2 Nights)

Day 4: Lake District

Today embark on a full day excursion of Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, the heartland of the Lake District. The Todos los Santos Lake, the Osorno Volcano, and the Monte Tronador Volcano are natural wonders we can find here. Board a modern, enclosed catamaran for sailing through the turquoise waters of Todos Los Santos Lake. Stop at the remote hamlet of Peulla, at the border with Argentina, to enjoy walks and views of the snow-capped Andes and emerald-colored lakes. Visit the Petrohué Falls, a succession of rapids against a backdrop of Andean mountains and Chile’s magnificent Osorno Volcano.

Day 5: Puerto Montt / Punta Arenas / Puerto Natales

Visit the colorful and bustling Angelmo fish and handicraft market. Then, fly to Punta Arenas, Chile’s southernmost city, on the Strait of Magellan opposite Tierra del Fuego. Founded in 1848, in its golden age it served as a port-of-call for all ships circumnavigating the world. Travel north through expansive Patagonian pampas to Puerto Natales, the gateway to the most spectacular sights in southern Patagonia. Look for guanacos, rheas, and condors. (4 Nights)

Day 6: Torres del Paine National Park

By far, the most impressive sight in southern Chile is Torres del Paine National Park, known as the crown jewel of Patagonia. The dramatic mountain formations of towering rock, windswept pampas, ice fields, and glaciers, make it an impressive and unforgettable sight.

Day 7: Torres del Paine National Park

Look out for herds of guanacos and rheas, flamingos, condors, foxes, geese, and black-necked swans. Lakes and lagoons abound. The park is surrounded by impressive mountains. Hike or ride horses or simply relax in the surrounding wilderness.

Travel to a nearby ranch accessible only by boat to experience what life is in a Patagonian estancia or ranch. At the ranch, choose from a variety of adventures like horseback riding, four- wheel off-road drive, bird watching, and hiking. Revel in the mountains, fjords, and glaciers of this remote outpost. Enjoy a delicious asado or barbecue, including lamb raised in the estancia.
