The Skies of South Africa
Program Overview
Venture to South Africa to explore the stars and the skies from magnificent sites such as the Cradle of Human Kind at Maropeng just outside Johannesburg and Sutherland home to some of the world's clearest and darkest night skies. Arrive in Johannesburg, where we'll tour the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory as well as the Sterkfontein Caves, location of the oldest humanoid fossil remains in the world. In Cape Town, we'll visit the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) the national center for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa and learn about cutting edge research as well as the history of the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope founded in 1820. Later we'll travel to the MeerKAT Engineering Office to learn about the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the Southern Hemisphere and gain insight into the progression of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) due to come online in 2024. The highlight of our tour will be our visit to the Sutherland Observatory, home to the Southern African Largest Telescope or SALT, the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. Your journey will plunge you into the depths of astronomical explorations currently being undertaken in this country and its international contributions towards science and technology.
